Process Steez: Robin Hood: Prince of Steez

Aw yea everyone likes a good Kevin Costner reference. Anyway I'm back with another Process Steez post for all y'all, this time finishing what I started in regards to the Sacrifice Collection Bandana. From where I left off last time I was getting into the groove 80's style and inking up the final artwork, but there was trouble on the horizon... but we'll get to that later.

Here it is with all the ink blocked in. You'll notice, if you're looking closely in order to find something that I fucked up and complain about it to me later, that I haven't gotten right into all the gaps and outlines properly yet. This is because unlike the main shirt graphic with the Satanic priestess I did this first and really wanted to do it all by hand, so I needed to be careful to not go too far when inking straight away, because there is no Cmd+Z in real life (oh dear satan in hell how I wish there was).  At this point I was pretty happy with it (hint: I am stupid).

If you think I am going to move, you are sorely mistaken. Pitiful human.

After I checked out of hospital and somewhat regained the sight in my left eye after a vicious cat scratch attack that was completely unprovoked I set to work inking this bad boy. I've gotten alot more detailed here, cutting in on a lot of the forms and beginning to give form to some of the objects. You can see the bandages look a bit shit, that's partly because I haven't finished adding the shadows and textures to them and partly because I suck at life. I've also stayed away fromt he horns as I wanted to try a slightly different approach to tackle them, helping to give them a more appropriate texture, or so I thought.

See what I mean? I'm using a brush instead of just a plain 'ol pen to give it a rougher feel, to maybe (not really) purvey to the viewer that these are organic forms, rather than plastic dildos or whatever. Shit, now I can't stop looking at them as if they are some sort of primitive genitalia stimulation device used by horny, but lonely druids wives. I am fucked up. You can also see that I'm being a lame ass and using pencil to help me remember where the curve of the horns/antlers (can't remember what they actually are andI'm too lazy to look it up, it's late) I wanted to make sure I conveyed that sense of them twisting over themselves to feel the idea that these are real organic... things.

And here it is 'finished'. While technically the drawing is actually finished, the bandana design isn't. What the effing fuck are you talking about? You ask. What I mean you impatient dipshit is that After I did all that I realised that it sucked more than the usual dog excrement that I churn out. The horns are now waaaay too textured and busy compared to the rest of the objects, so is the feather, and the bandages are too curly and twisty, and I am not happy. Now there are many benefits to doing something like this as a 'hobby' (ie my life does not depend on it, yet), but the best one is probably being in a situation like this I can take a good look at what I've done, and realise I hate it.

So what the hell do I do? Start again like Billy Fucking Idol.

The main thing I had to do was fix up those stupid bandages. They were too much of a distraction from the main composition. It didn't look like a pentagram and that was the whole point of the damn thing! So I streamlined them and came up with a simpler design that complimented the pentagram, not fought with it for dominance. You can see I started again from scratch, because that's how I roll, making it harder for myself than it has to be since '82, I couldn't just do it separate and photoshop it in, that seemed like a cop out, like that movie Cop Out, except not as shit.

So here is the final product, all levelled out in photoshop and ready for a screen. It took a little bit longer than it was supposed to, but it got there and I don't hate it nearly as much as the other one. After this I went onto the shirt design with slightly more of a clue than before, especially how to deal with the shadows eating into the forms to show their forms. I still kinda fucked it up though.

I got some AWESOME stuff up coming soon, not quite in the same vein as these process posts, but a lot more interesting, trust me.

Cheers
Roh
